 Manny and A-Rod

Two big names have already moved, with C.C. Sabathia going to the Brewers, and Rich Harden joining the Cubs. Both pitchers have already had huge impacts for their respective clubs. Sabathia gives the Brewers the best one-two punch in baseball (along with Ben Sheets), and Harden has thrown three straight 10-strikeout games for Chicago. Is there anyone else on the trade market that will have this kind of impact? Read on…

Firstly, it looks like Manny Ramirez is done in Boston. The Sox will have to be getting an incredible return to move him now, though. Manny has confirmed that he is going to waive his 10-5 rights if the right deal came along, and he appears to be done with the Boston management. Expect Ramirez to finish the season in Boston, but start off elsewhere next year. He is getting up there in years but is still one of the best hitters in the game. Manny to the Yankees would make for quite an interesting off-season.

A report out of Toronto suggests the Jays may be willing to offer AJ Burnett some more money in order to keep him around for the final two years of his contract. If they knew what was good for them (and judging by GM Riccardi’s recent moves they don’t), they would flip Burnett to an NL contender and get some good young bats back. The Cardinals are in the hunt, as they were when Burnett was a free agent before signing with Toronto. Maybe the Jays can get Glaus back…

Adrian Beltre’s name has been popping up in trade rumours, but the Mariners will have to sweeten the pot ($$$) to get any team to take Beltre’s mediocre bat and extraordinary contract. The Twins are apparently in the hunt, but they would need a lot of cash to compensate for the shock Beltre would be to their tight payroll. At least the Mariners aren’t being led by Bill Bavasi anymore, who in his time as their GM had a stranglehold on the title of worst GM in the league.

Finally, watch out for Francisco Liriano’s return to the bigs. He has been tearing apart the minors over the past while, posting a 5-0 record in his last five starts with a miniscule 0.26 ERA.  His return to dominance has coincided with him returning to the ¾ delivery that allowed him to mow down MLB talent two years ago. There is a bit of an interesting story with regards to him being called up, and the league is investigating it. There is a clause in his contract that renders him arbitration-ineligible if he isn’t in the big leagues at a certain point, which would definitely help the Twins keep his salary down for the next few years.
