The playoffs have begun in many fantasy leagues, and we are all looking for the hot players to get us over the top. Injuries become more of an issue and we need those plug and play streakers who can maintain or even improve on that lost production.
Luckily, the fantasy playoffs do correspond with the September call-ups which not only brings us more talent to choose from but also gives us players we are able to snag and potentially get enough of a sneak preview from to hold for next season and beyond. This talent is also higher end often than the average call-up throughout the season.
It is an exciting time. Here are some of those players, young and old, making waves helping or waiting to help fantasy teams on their way to a championship.
Chris Dickerson, LF/CF, CIN Last Month: 75 AB, 6 HR, 5 SB, 53 TB, .320 AVG Last Week: 23 AB, 6 HR, 2 SB, 20 TB, .348 AVG The numbers are unrelenting. This 26-year-old late bloomer has never hit this well at any level. His BABIP or batting average for balls in play is .400 at the major league level which is 20 points higher than it has ever been but it has been rising with ever stop along the way. Still, that is hard to maintain considering two of the best average hitters in the game in Pujols and Holliday are hovering around .360. Look for a return to earth eventually but ride him while he is hot. He is also about to become center qualified as well which is valuable in many leagues.
Brian Giles, RF, SD Last Month: 97 AB, 5 HR, 49 TB, .299 AVG This aging former star is doing pretty well for himself the last few weeks. His power surge has been significant considering he only has 10 homers all season. He is a solid choice for average as always as well and could help you out in very deep leagues. Giles has had more homers after the break in his last two seasons as well including 12 out of 13 total last season coming after the mid-summer classic. Cliff Floyd, LF/RF, TB Last Month: 52 AB, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 33 TB, .346 AVG Last Week: 12 AB, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 13 TB, .583 AVG Huge average and nice RBI total this week is really striking. He also had two more hits on Thursday. Floyd is always a great waiver snag when he is healthy and rolling. He is good when he has it together. He is currently competing with Gabe Gross who is also on fire (last week had 2 homers and .389 average). With Crawford out, both these guys have an opportunity to continue performing and help you significantly.
Travis Snider, LF, TOR Last Week: 12 AB, 4 H, 5 TB, .333 AVG Now besides that decent start in the last week, Travis Snider had two of those hits Wednesday and three more on top of those numbers Thursday along with his first homer. This guy has Braun upside. Grab him if available in a one year and ride him the rest of the way. Toronto should give him a lot of time. In a keeper, he should already be long gone.
Brandon Wood, SS/3B, LAA Last Week: 22 AB, 7 H, 1 SB, .318 AVG The numbers may not be huge across the board but his new qualification and improved average are huge. Los Angeles seems to be happy with his play at his old position as well which should only help continue to get him into games. Snag him before he really starts jacking the ball. His value could go up like a rocket before the end of this season.
Josh Anderson, CF, ATL Last Week: 32 AB, 1 HR, 3 SB, .281 AVG For a long and short-term speed option, you can't do much better than the new full time Braves outfielder. He has elite speed and is hitting for a solid average. That is a lethal combination. He had 40 stolen bases in Triple-A last season. Velez and Bonifacio are also hitting well in the last few games and have speed to offer.
Randy Wolf, SP, HOU Last Week: 15 IP, 1 W, 1 CG, 9 K, .60 ERA, .80 WHIP Always an undervalued pitcher, Wolf is again streaking with a microscopic ERA following his complete game this past week. He is very solid all the way around with an ERA at 4.00 so don't be afraid to use his services to fill that injury void.
Kevin Millwood, SP, TEX Last Month: 29 IP, 3 W, 2 CG, 20 K, 2.76 ERA, 1.09 WHIP Last Week: 6.2 IP, 1 W, 7 K, 2.70 ERA, .75 WHIP Another veteran who is always great as a streak pitcher. He was once the best in the league and has climbed to that level again in the past month. He has been even better this past start. Why not give him the chance to prove it again for your team if you are streaming for the win.
Brandon McCarthy, SP, TEX Last Month: 16 IP, 1 W, 9 K, 2.25 ERA, 1.12 WHIP Another Texas rotation member is doing very well this month. After returning from a very solid stint in the minors, McCarthy is looking again like the top prospect he was once touted as. Still only 25, there is a lot to like here now and in the future.
