Oakland takes Holliday

The Oakland Athletics have acquired All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday in exchange for closer Huston Street, starter Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.

The Athletics get: One of the most well-rounded superstar performers of 2008. Not only did he demonstate his typical good power and all-world average, but at the age of 28, Matt Holliday also picked up another tool by stealing 28 bases. Matt will have a huge impact on the center of the A's lineup. Holliday may also serve as a great deadline trade piece for young bats should the A's not contend this season.

The Rockies get: All the pieces to reload before losing Holliday in 2009. Carlos Gonzalez will take Holliday's place, contributing immense, yet untapped talent which has yet to take flight. Gonzalez hit only .242 with four homers and four steals in 302 at bats this season. Still, he was considered one of the top prospects in the game when in the Arizona system and is only 23. Greg Smith, coming off surgery now, had a solid rookie debut. Only 25, Smitch had a 3.43 ERA prior to the All-Star Break. Finally, the Rockies snagged another closer in Huston Street with the departure of Fuentes to free agency. It is possible they will flip Street as they may be confident with Corpas in the role.

Fantasy Impact: This move changes a lot of things. With an amazing run last season, Ziegler is now a near lock to continue his closer work he stole from Street last season. Street, on the other hand, gets a new life either competing with the lesser Corpas or moving on to another new team in need of his services. Gonzalez will surely be given every chance to succeed and this park will be great to boost his confidence and numbers. Greg Smith may be hurt the most by this move. Despite humidor intervention, Denver is still the toughest place in the league to pitch. He has upside, but he will have to overcome the mental intimidation as much as anything. Finally, Holliday may be in for a value drop as well. He will still be very productive, but his power has never been really huge, and there is a chance it could fall 20-30% with this move. His average will also fall in Oakland. In his career, he has hit over 70 points lower on the road with half the homers. Be prepared for a drop in his numbers across the board as his steals will probably decrease as well.
