The Washington Nationals acquired outfielder Josh Willingham and starting pitcher Scott Olsen from the Marlins for Emilio Bonifacio, prospect pitcher P.J. Dean and second basemen Jake Smolinski.
The Nationals get: an accelerated face lift that sitll keeps them young and improving. Olsen is young at the age of 24 and Willingham is far from old at 29. Olsen has the talent to still become a star starter in this league and has show the flashes. His ERA went down dramatically last season over the year before but his strikeouts did suffer. Willingham will bring a good veteran presence to a very young clubhouse and is good for 25 homers each season if healthy.
The Marlins get: a salary dump. Bonifacio is a good addition from this deal for the future but does not seem to have the upside that someone like Olsen would have. He did steal 21 bases in the minors last year and had a great average of .337 down there. He struggled at first at the major leagues but improved and snagged a few bases as well. Dean is a 20-year-old pitcher who is far from the majors. He did post a solid 1.57 ERA in Class-A last year in 46 innings with 34 strikeouts. Smolinski was drafted in the second round in 2007 and has shown a good average in the low minors. Still, he has very little power or speed thus far.
Fantasy Impact: In the short term, the Nationals have definitely improved with this deal while the major league club for Florida has regressed. Still, the Marlins accomplished the cuts they desired and usually have a good eye for young talent. Only time will tell. I would keep a closer eye on these prospects as a result but don't hold your breath. Bonifacio has no where to go other than to the minors or the outfield so his value likely drops for now. There is room for both Willingham and Olsen to get plenty of opportunity with the Nats. Josh will play along side rising yet risky stars in Milledge and Dukes while Olsen will have a chance to become the ace of their staff. |
