The Chicago Cubs have acquired Closer Kevin Gregg in exchange for minor league relief pitcher Jose Ceda.
The Cubs get: a proven and serviceable closer who will not amaze you but gets the job done. He has averaged 30 saves for a non-playoff Marlins club along with a mid-3.00 ERA.
The Marlins get: to avoid salary arbitration with Mr. Gregg. He did an amazing job for them as first an emergency closer and then the go to guy, but they just don't want to spend that money at all anymore. Much like the Olsen/Willingham deal, the Marlins gave up proven talent for very little in getting a talented, but unaccomplished, Jose Ceda in return. He had a 2.08 ERA with nine saves in 22 games for Tennesse in Double A. He is only 21 years of age.
Fantasy Impact: Does this mean the Cubs are off the market for Francisco Rodriguez or any other closer? Possibly. I think this is a bit of a downgrade from the Wood and Marmol tandem but if Hendry is being honest, the Cubs aren't prepared to offer any reliever, Wood or K-Rod, a long contract. So, if that is true, looks like they cut their losses and will go with either Marmol or Gregg closing and focus on their starting pitching. Gregg's value for your fantasy team does go up going to the better club, but we have to see if he is indeed the closer and if the short fences at Wrigley raise that already average ERA. |
