The New York Yankees acquired Nick Swisher and, ironically, pitcher Kaneoka "Te(i)xeira" giving up pitching prospect Jeff Marquez, major league infielder Wilson Betemit and pitcher Jhonny Nunez.
The Yankees get: a versitile power hitter who is a great backup player at first base should the Teixeira they really want, decide to go elsewhere. He is also good as a DH potentially, or to fill the void in the outfield left with the departure of Abreu.
The White Sox get: the mistake they made off their books. Still owned over $20 million over the next three years with an option for the fourth, the White Sox are happy to move on. They receive a hard throwing 24-year-old in Jeff Marquez, a serviceable and flexible backup in Betemit should Fields fail or injuries occur, and another young pitcher who is only 21 in Nunez.
Fantasy Impact: This is another trade that has interesting impact on the free agent activities. Will the Yankees now back off on Teixiera? No. They would be best to use Swisher to backup their new star first basemen and outfielder and the DH from time to time. He isn't Yankee starter caliber if they really want to make a splash in their new digs this year. Still, Cashman is very smart to buy low on Swisher. That is the same kind of move fantay players should be doing. He is very cheap right now but had averaged 28 homers, 86 homers and a .258 average with the A's the previous two seasons. He should rebound a bit and still possesses good power regardless. Even if the team doesn't have a starting field spot for him, DH and his flexibility should still get him 145 games and the probable stacked lineup could really help him. This other Texeira, 22, is an interesting relief pitcher in that he had a 1.33 ERA between two levels over 41 games and had a strikout per inning. On the other side of the deal, I think Nunez is the player to watch as he had an ERA approaching five in the minors this year but also struckout 116 in only 108 innings. He is still very young and that shows tons of potential. More immediately, the White Sox claim Marquez will challenge for a roster spot next season but his numbers are far from impressive.
