Here are the players we all love to hate. Introducing the DobberBaseball All-Band-Aid Boys Team.
The rule of thumb- if you ever manage to acquire, accidentally or otherwise - a member of the team, get them off your team immediately. The will do more harm than good. One day they will be hitting a homerun and the next they will be sitting on the bench, costing you the week. If you acquire a band-aid boy prospect, then keeping this player is acceptable...but just be cautious. These are not actual baseball prospects but they are prospects for the All-Star Band-Aid Boys Team. It is possible to go from "team" back to "prospect", or from "prospect" right off of this list. To do that, the player would need to escape the following rules...
Rules: Manager- Notorious injury leader. This player is hurt so often that he has zero value based on reputation alone. Batters- Must have less then 125 games in 2 straight seasons. Starters- Must have less then 25 games played in 2 straight seasons Relief Pitchers- Must have less then 60 games played in 2 straight seasons. Prospect- A list of people to watch before they hit this big league! (people close to the criteria) Hall of fame- TBA
Manager: Mark Prior, SD- Has not pitched in 25 games in a season since 2005. He has only done so twice and his max appearances was 30 in his superstar 2003 season. Shame because that season showed he could be the best pitcher in the game if healthy.
Catcher: Johnny Estrada, WAS- In his eight-year career, he has only exceeded the 125 games once (134 in 2004). Even for a catcher, that easily qualifies this once promising fantasy backstop.
First Base: Mike Sweeney, OAK- Nursing his knee surgery right now. Since 2006 has played 136 games (2005 he played 122).
Second Base: Howie Kendrick, LAA- Was injured earlier in the season. In three season's he has only played 160 games.
Third Base: Scott Rolen, TOR- Has been injured periodically throughout his career. Since 2001 he has been up and down.
Shortstop: Nomar Garciaparra, LAD- Former manager. Has not played more than 125 games in five seasons and won't in 2008 either. His injuries have destroyed his once superstar value but SS value has returned at least.
Left Field: Moises Alou, NYM- Still playing... I guess. Since 2006 has played 185 games (429 games from 03-05).
Center Field: Rocco Baldelli, TB- Since 2006 has played 127 games (2004 he played 136 alone). Curretly 60 Day DL.
Right Field: Ken Griffey Jr., CIN- Ever since he left Seattle, Griffey hasn't stayed healthy (206 games 02-04).
Designated Hitter: Milton Bradley, TEX- With him being a DH he might be off this list in a year. Since 2005 has played 232 games (241 games in 03-04).
#1 Starter: Rich Harden, OAK- Since 2005 has pitched 39 games (31 games in 2004) Great pitcher if he stays healthy.
#2 Starter: Mike Hampton, ATL- #2 because he has a ton of injury issues (hasn't played since 2005) and was once a great pitcher (see 1999)
#3 Starter: Mark Mulder, STL- Since 2005 he has pitched 53 games.
#4 Starter: Bartolo Colon, BOS- You have to wonder what kind of career the 5-11, 250lbs former Cy Young winner could have had if he took care of himself. Pedro Martinez, NYM- Since 2005 has pitched 59 games.
#5 Starter: Carl Pavano, NYY- Since 2005 he has pitched 19 games (Still recovering from right elbow surgery).
Set-Up: Octavio Dotel, CHW- 2004 was the last season he pitched 60 or more innings.
Closer: Kerry Wood, CHC- Before this season, had pitched 49 games since 2004. May escape list next season with this new closer role.
Bench: Bobby Crosby, OAK- Since 2005 has played 273 games (151 games just in 04). Randy Wolf, SD- Since 2005 has pitched 43 games (33 games in 2003 alone) Ben Sheets, MIL- Has had the injury bug since 2004. Came one game short of escaping list last year and should finally this year. Jason Schmidt, LAD- Since moving to the Dodgers he has only started 6 games (On IR now in his 2nd season). Chris Carpenter, STL- Since 2006 he has pitched 32 games (Out much of this year due to TJS). Nick Johnson, WAS- Out for the season this year, and only played in 38 games last season. *New Additions* Eric Chavez, OAK- Surprisingly didn't qualify until recently because of his 137 games in '06. Now, he has missed enough this season already, and his career may be in jeopardy. Chris Ray, BAL- He managed to get into 61 games in 2006 but their closer hasn't been heard from at all in 2008 due to elbow surgery. Ryan Freel, CIN- Gutsy little speed option who just can't stay in the lineup. Only 75 games last year and less than that this year. Tom Gordon, PHI - whatever Flash of talent has been extinguished by now. It used to be that he was among the best pitchers in the game. Only 40 innings last year and he'll be hard pressed to get even to that level this year.
Prospects: Roman Hernandez, BAL- Since 2004 he has played one season over 125 games (144 games in 2006). Joel Zumaya, DET- When you get hurt playing Guitar Hero you make this list!!!!!! Chris Snyder, ARZ- Poor Guy, when you have to be on the DL for a testicular fracture your on this list. Francisco Liriano, MIN- Even if he does regain his form, will his mechanics allow him to stay healthy long enough to justify his immense abilities? A.J. Burnett, FLA- Only one game off from qualifying with 25 starts in 2007. Still, this guy is always getting banged up and has only started 30 or more games twice and 25 or more four times in his 10-year career coming into this season. Chipper Jones, ATL- This guy always seems to miss 30 games each season. Still, he only has met the Band-Aid Boy requirements once (2005 with 109 games and 2006 with 110 games). Still, he is a great prospect for the list and is very annoying to own sometimes.
More to come...
