Lance Berkman will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss two to four weeks because of it. What a month ago had the potential to be a great rebound year for Big Puma is now too much of a gamble. Maybe if you already have a solid 1B (keeper or early draft pick) Berkman might be a decent gamble, but you can't expect consistency after he returns.
There is a strong possibility that the Mets will start Ruben Tejada, not Alex Cora, at SS until Reyes is able to return. The 19-year-old Tejada is batting .364 this spring with a .440 OBP. Cora's batting .385, but has taken no walks, which is nothing new (career .313 OBP). Tejada doesn't have much power (upside of 10 HR) but has 20+ SB speed and could rack up the runs in front of Wright and Bay for the first couple weeks of the season.

Jose Reyes' pesky thyroid will keep him out for two to eight weeks. Pretty big window, buddy. Omar Minaya isn't optimistic his star shortstop will be ready by Opening Day, but that's like the weatherman saying he doesn't think it will rain three weeks from now. Continue to keep tabs on him but even if he's declared 100%, would you feel confident drafting him?
Lance Berkman is unconcerned that his sprained knee keeps swelling up. I'm glad he's going the glass-half-full route, but as someone who liked him for a big rebound this year, I am now quite concerned about the 34-year-old.
Todd Helton has signed an extension with the Rockies that will keep him in black and purple through the 2013 season. He's not the power option he used to be, but he seems to have proved that his injury-shortened 2008 was just a hiccup. With all the young talent around him, he should have little trouble producing.
Russell Branyan (back) is still rehabbing and if it takes much longer, Michael Brantley will be the Indians starting left fielder on Opening Day, with Matt LaPorta manning first. Playing Branyan at first and moving LaPorta to left would be a mistake, inhibiting the development of young talent.
Pujols (back) and Holliday (rib-cage) are both missing time. AP is expected back this weekend, while Holliday could be another week or so, but missing Opening Day isn't yet a concern.
Shaun Marcum is one more impressive out away from locking up the Opening Day start. He's thrown five scoreless innings.
The Cubs' Starlin Castro is lighting it up this spring and is going to start the year with Triple-A. We could get the callup much sooner than originally thought. As in one of those "J" months.
Chris Davis has only 3 Ks in 16 AB. That's good for a K% that's less than half his rate from last year. Very encouraging if he keeps it up.
Dioner Navarro took a ball off the hand during a pickoff attempt; X-rays were inconclusive and he will be reevaluated in a couple days. Any significant amount of time missed would be a big boost to Kelly Shoppach's value.
Matt Joyce has an elbow strain and sit out at least the next couple days. This would be a big boost the Desmond Jennings' value had he not suffered his own injury this week, a sprained wrist that will keep him out for the remainder of the Grapefruit League schedule. The door is open, albeit breifly, for Sean Rodriguez, who is 7-for-20 this spring with 7 R, 3 HR and 7 RBI already. Rodriguez is a natural second baseman and could be push Zobrist to right (but could also just to right himself) if Joyce misses any lengthy amount of time.
Concern over Brian Roberts (herniated disk) is growing. If can successfully take some swings by Monday, I'll feel somewhat better, but if I'm drafting next week I'm looking elsewhere at the keystone.
