Prospect Wednesdays! Week 29

by Geoff on September 14, 2016

Every Wednesday, the Rambling takes a youthful turn…

This week, let's catch up on some year-long rookie excellence with a few quick hits.

Do we even remember that Corey Seager (SS, LAD) is a rookie any more? The Dodgers' shortstop has been consistently great all year. He is currently rocking a 319/.377/.534 line, with 25 home runs. Amazing. His only competition for NL rookie of the year is his teammate, and another guy you may have forgotten is a rookie…

Kenta Maeda (SP, LAD) - the Dodgers’ 28-year-old rookie is currently 14-9, with a 3.28 ERA and a tiny 1.09 WHIP. He has been dominant, having given up more than four runs just once all year (and that was five runs). He and Seager, along with Julio Urias and Jose De Leon, are giving the Dodgers fans a lot to smile about these days. The future is full of good baseball in LA.

Ryan Schimpf (2B, SD) is still reminding us of Giancarlo Stanton - and it’s a good thing, since Stanton’s been out of the starting lineup so long. Schimpf was at it again last night, belting his 19th homer in just 74 games. That's a 41-home run pace over an entire season. Many will see the average (.229) and look away in fright, but gaze instead at the huge power and 12% BB-rate. He's a keeper.

Can anything stop Trea Turner (SS/CF, WAS)? He has put up 8 HR, 12 2B, 6 3B, 41 R, and 24 SB in just 56 games! Along with his 338/.359/.538 line, he's been flat-out incredible. He simply isn't walking, but what happens when he does that, too? 56 games - that’s slightly over a THIRD of the season. Extrapolate and dream.

Gary Sanchez (CA, NYY) - What's going on with this guy? He has 14 homers in 36 games. Yes, that’s a 66-home run pace. Yes, he has a .706 SLG. Ok, so he won't keep this up over a full season, but his 10+% BB-rate and power swing will keep him going for a long time.

Let's not forget Seung Hwan Oh (RP, STL) (yes, that’s a copy and paste). The Cardinals closer, at 34, is still a rookie. He has 17 saves since becoming the closer, and he's sporting a 1.87 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. He has a 12.07 K/9. This impressive first-year geezer will be the closer until his arm falls off.

All stats through Tuesday, September 13th.
